Straumann CS2 scanner Beta test results

Here at Byrnes we have been using the CS2 scanner from Straumann (used to be Etkon) for 8 weeks now.  This blog is to document how we are getting on with the new scanner, how the new materials are working and lastly how its working in our business.  I’ll give you a decent bit of information in this post but after this we’ll keep it short and sweet on new developments and information from us at Byrnes.

Well firstly, its a better looking machine, gone is the battleship grey box with those nasty corners and in is the almost apple mac styling of white and black with not a corner to be seen.  Its glossy, sexy and looks like a modern, state of the art system.  In a dental world where we are showing more clients and patients around our laboratory and demonstrating our equipment its critical that the machines looks clean, professional and upmarket which this scanner certainly does.

But how does it work?  Well lets just say that since we took this on our output has increased by around 20% and its rising.  Its easy to use, intuitive and the increase in options is a vast step up from the old ES1.  The Ivoclar options have increased, E-max and Empress can now be made on veneers, inlays, onlays, crowns and copings.  All the shade options are there and combined with the new anatomical tool this has really changed how we are working to the point where our pressing has dropped by about 75%.

You can now scan full un-sectioned models without any need to place dies in the cylinders.  Its not perfect but as long as the die margins are clear it works a treat and saves you a huge amount of time.  The scan quality from these scans is quite simply some of the best I have ever seen, the downside is this does take longer to scan.  These increase of lab scans have not had any effect to our working day as the time saved from cylinder scans, increase amount of CAD-CAM work and the increase of fit (less adjustment time) means we are pushing more units through in less time.

Well I’ll leave you now and discuss each restoration in depth in further blogs but lets just say that I had high expectations of this new scanner, so has it delivered?  Oh yes!  That and an awful lot more!
